A doula is a woman wickedly well versed in the birthing year. She provides emotional, physical and informational support during your birthing experience. While most birth doulas offer a couple of prenatal and postpartum visits, the bulk of the support is offered during labour and birth. A doula is the one constant, experienced support person that cares for you (and often yours) ‘waist-up’, during your labour when you might see many others come and go, with nursing shift changes and doctors/midwives going on/off call . A doula comes to your home when labour has established and stays by your side until baby is born and breastfeeding is established. A doula in no way replaces partner, mum, sister or friend, but rather allows those you love to participate at a level they’re comfortable with, safe in the knowledge that there is someone constant and close by that has done this many times before. The statistics that go along with having a doula present are very encouraging; it decreases your chance of epidural and c-section by 50%, shortens labour by 25% and increases your chances of success with breastfeeding, and overall satisfaction with your birthing experience. The doula providing this particular service is a mum of one, soon to be 2, is certified as a birth doula, has nearly five years of experience in the field, and has been present for over 30 births. He and his 13 year old sister just recently went to Disneyland with their parents, on money earned from over 4 years of collecting bottles for recycling from our housing co-operative and 50% of their funds from the recycling went to various charities! He is a passionate, talented focused kid who has donated these candles to benefit Sandra.
